Feng Shui Advice and Guidance for Winter ~
Hexagram #20 CONTEMPLATING from the I Ching describes the overall guidance for effective Feng Shui:
“Just as the life of the individual is composed of seasons, the spring of inspiration, the summer of work, the autumn of completion and the winter of rest and contemplation, so too worldly events have their seasons. When attempting to determine the meaning and tendency of a situation at this time, approach it with the predictable plan of the seasons in mind. By contemplating the present situation and taking note of what immediately preceded it, you should be able to determine what will follow.” ~ The I Ching Workbook, R.L. Wing, Random House, NYC, NY, 1979
Midwinter is an Important Time for Discovering Priorities ~
As a New Lunar Year approaches, we naturally have an opportunity to notice what’s been working and what hasn’t. Having lots of goals that lead all over the place can really dis-regulate our emotional balance and drain our energy.
Society projects an impatient desire to push and do ever more things, bigger and better! We feel pressured and overwhelm ourselves by asking for too many things, expecting too much – especially when Nature is in a state of rest and restoration.
In Feng Shui, the Winter season is a time to slow down, reconnect with the Light that lives within and nurture it. If we’re lucky, we’ve Planted the Seeds for Happiness in a way where we can actualize emotional satisfaction through balance. If that is in place, we are set up to share our Light with others as the season progresses onward towards Spring. Certainly a goal worth aspiring to!
Keeping in mind the guidance available from the Chinese Zodiac signs and the predominant I Ching Energy flows, here is some Feng Shui Guidance on how to be proactive with energies that may be interfering with your growth, happiness and prosperity.
Especially with the addition of the I Ching flow of # 12 STAGNATION, overwhelming, dangerous and conflicting energies are amplified. You may feel alternately dragged down into the heavy energy below or elevated by the chaotic energy spinning out of control around you.
In either case, the easiest place for you to start making changes from a FENG SHUI perspective is to go through your home and property and clean up any clutter that may have accumulated.
Examine whether old objects are still supporting you in the life you want to be living or getting in the way of future growth. If you’ve done pretty well with that, great!

Stepping Into the New Lunar Year with Feng Shui ~
Feng Shui (pronunced “fung shway”) is a Chinese term that means “wind and water” symbolizing the natural flow of “chi” or life energy that flows through our environment and supports life. Predating Taoism and Confucianism, this ancient art of flow and placement in one’s environment has been used to facilitate balance and well being in every important aspect of life. It has also been used to ensure that we are in the “right place at the right time.”
Feng Shui can make a real difference in the ch’i of your home and the success of your business by:
- Creating a more balanced and harmonious atmosphere.
- Grounding a sense of safety and stability.
- Clearing your space of stagnant, toxic or disturbing influences.
- Freeing your property of any old baggage and negative history from the past or previous occupants including: bankruptcy, criminal activity, death, illness, divorce, etc.
- Accessing a generative flow of life force to support life-affirming goals.
If you are:
- Easily overwhelmed by having too much to do
- Feeling unstable and having trouble staying grounded
- Running around in circles, getting little constructive done
- Experiencing rough communications and emotional volatility
- Having difficulty staying on track with your goals, or alternately
- Feeling very stuck and unable to move
